Highway Traffic Management Merseburg

Situation
As traffic nodal point in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, the highways B91 and B181 meet in Merseburg. A throughput of 40,000 vehicles per day has frequently been measured on the B91. Heavy rainfalls often result in sporadical flooding of the B181 with the fatal effect of complete closure.

Task
strategic optimization of traffic flow and intervention by means of sophisticated traffic guidance technology in case of massive disturbances.
informing the road users in time about road closures or detours

Solution
  • collection and analysis of traffic data. For that, the collected raw data is processed by the sub-control center in a way that variables like traffic volume, capacity and vehicle speed are incorporated in the situation analysis of traffic flow as a basis for traffic control decisions.
  • dynamic traffic guidance. Dynamic direction signs and variable message signs undertake the task of informing the road users in time about road closures or detours. The signs can be controlled both manually and automatically by the sub-control center.
  • Web camera monitors flooding section: Verifying the measuring results of the flooding sensor by means of a web camera.
  • Push service by fax and text message: The user interface of M-UniComp's traffic management system displays the status of the traffic lights as dynamic icons in an overview map as well as in table form. The system transmits incident reports via a variably tunable filter functionality as a push service automatically by fax or text message to the maintenance staff.

The sub-control center Merseburg is one of Germany's first open systems according to OCIT® standard.
