Black-Ice Warning System Zurich
With the Zurich black-ice warning system micKS has installed five autonomous weather information centers in Northern Switzerland that shall be integrated into a superior control system in the future.
Goals
- Receiving a complete canton-spanning overview of the road conditions.
- The winter maintenance services get 24 hours road condition information This enables them to initiate adequate action in due time.
- Apart from the economic damage that can be prevented due to fewer accidents and safe roads, the winter maintenance service can also anticipate a long-term cost reduction.
System Design
The system maintains five weather information centers in the Zurich canton as well as three remote operational stations each in the cantons Glarus, Schwyz and St. Gallen. Every center works autonomously; it merges all the data pertaining to the respective winter service region.
Weather Data Center
The information system WINDS is the core of the computer center and processes all the measuring-point data, the meteorological information of the Swiss Weather Service as well as the surface data of the weather radar institutions. They supportingly provide weather warnings, weather reports, forecasts and meteograms.
Thermal Mapping
In order to inform about the road conditions between single strategic measuring points micKS has thermally mapped approximately 350 road kilometers in cooperation with the Dutch Weather Service Meteoconsult. On these road sections the road conditions are visualized on the road maps of the operational stations exactly according to the corresponding weather.

Notification Service: In order to alarm the winter maintenance services, an interface to the pager system of the canton police of Zurich has been established, which facilitates a cost-saving and efficient notification in case of operation. Notification services can be configured userspecificly and are able to alarm automatically if pre-defined criteria are fulfilled.
Sensor Technology
56 black-ice warning systems that comprise at least two road surface probes as well as snow-level and visibility measurement devices. Equipment to measure air temperature, dew point, wind and precipitation is also included in delivery.
