TRAFFIC DATA ACQUISITION

Traffic Data Acquisition > Traffic Counting System

Traffic Counting System

Weiss-Electronic’s permanent traffic counting systems detect traffic data via induction loops. From the detection curves, the detectors determine the individual vehicle data required by the TLS-BASt, such as vehicle class, speed, occupancy and driving direction. The components for traffic data acquisition are built into an EMC-rack. Prefabricated ribbon cables connect the connector panel with the rack.

Traffic Counting System via GPRS
The outstation is connected with the internet via the mobile telephone service General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). The transmission is realised by means of separate data packets, i.e. the infrastructure of the mobile network is only used when data is actually being transmitted.
Thus, most rates calculate the transferred amount of data and not the connection time. The benefits for the client: not only the decrease in costs for the regularly incurring transmission of traffic data, but also the faster data communication by means of a more efficiently utilisation of capacity.

Easy migration to future services
Furthermore, future mobile telephone services (UMTS) will only support the packet-oriented transmission mode. The usage of GPRS will therefore ensure the sustainability of the Weiss-Electronic devices and allow an easy migration to future services. The permanent connection will allow the easy integration of further services such as incident reports into the system in the future.

The outstation acts like a server
The data forwarded via GPRS is directly exchanged between the mobile telephone network and the internet, with the consequence that the outstation has become an internet participant. It acts as server and is able to accept data connection from any computer in the internet. This is realised with the TLS-over-IP protocol, (scheduled to be included in the TLS) or with the WAN-Com protocol, which is approved in the field of subcentres. Furthermore, this capability to use the internet allows worldwide server connections for configurating and servicing the system.
