Highway Traffic Management

Traffic control by means of most modern traffic control installations habe become a necessity, which resulted in particular from the increasing density of traffic on motorways and motorway junctions during the past years.
Ambitions
  • Prevention of accidents
  • Improvement of traffic flow
  • Gathering data for traffic radio broadcasts
  • Traffic-adapted speed specifications
  • Avoidance of obstructions
Traffic flow
  • Harmonization of speeds on the individual traffic lanes of the motorway
  • Warning of fog, rain, etc. (i.e. of weather-related hazards)
  • Warning of traffic jams
The following systems are available for traffic control
  • Road-control installation
  • Network-control installation
  • Motorway junction-control installation
The Road-control installations manage the traffic on continuous routes by displaying speed limits and warning notes. The Network-control installations by means of variable sign posts, accomplish the required diversion of traffic in a regionally limited motorway network (road network). Depending on traffic intensity, junction-control installations assign individual lanes in a motorway junction to different traffic streams. This way, fluctuations of the traffic volume in the course of the day can be harmonised.

Elements of traffic control installations are:
  • Traffic processor control centre / sub-center
  • Road station
  • Traffic-data detection
  • Variable traffic-sign installation
  • Detection of environmental data
  • Detection of operational data
